Where are They Now? – Lauren Dunne

11-18-11Lauren_Dunne_s_Last_Day_7.21.11smLauren Dunne served with Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast from Aust 2010 – July 2011 as our Development Assistant and Thrivent Builds Worldwide Coordinator.

What do you remember as the best thing about work?

Working with volunteers from all over the country, and meeting such diverse and interesting people. Listening to everyone’s stories. Also, moving into the awesome new office.

About the Coast?

Living 3 blocks from the beach! Festivals going on every weekend, and visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.

In what way did the experience change you?

I learned so much about how nonprofits function, from communications to volunteer and donor management.

Would you recommend serving with AC/Vista?

I recommend AmeriCorps all the time! There’s such a huge variety of opportunities across the country and it’s really great professional experience. It’s a great resume and character builder (because it can be pretty tough to live on such a limited budget in a new town!) It was a great option for me right out of college to build professional experience, and the financial award really helped with my student loans. And I definitely recommend Habitat! I think both the office and construction positions are a great opportunity to learn a ton of new skills and really engage with volunteers and homeowners.

Thanks Lauren!  Good Luck to you as you continue your education and career.

Next week, we will hear from Chris Casey who – SPOILER ALERT! is writing from Hawaii. Happy Thanksgiving!

Where did you come from? I moved from Madison, WI where I went to college. But I’m from Chicago.
