What A Difference Ten Years Makes

Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005. The eye of the storm passed over Bay St. Louis, MS and the destruction stretched across the entire Gulf of Mexico Coast from Texas to Florida. The Mississippi Gulf Coast’s need for affordable housing increased exponentially with more than 230,000 homes left uninhabitable. Habitat for Humanity International recognized the need and quickly implemented “Operation Home Delivery”. They sent staff, volunteers and resources to the Gulf Coast to aid in the recovery effort. At the time Habitat for Humanity of Harrison County and Jackson County Habitat for Humanity were not fully staffed and did not have the capacity to tackle the need for affordable housing they now faced. Seeing the benefit of working together, the two affiliates merged to form Habitat for Humanity of the MS Gulf Coast (HFHMGC). Since Katrina HFHMGC has built, repaired or rehabbed over 1,000 homes. Last week we had an opportunity to not only commemorate the ten year anniversary of that cataclysmic storm, but celebrate the progress made all along the MS Gulf Coast.
We held our Hurricane Katrina Commemoration at our Fowler Fields Subdivision. It will be a 13 home subdivision in Pascagoula. We have begun the construction of three of the homes. Donations from our Katrina Fund are going towards completing these three homes and beginning on the other ten in Fowler Fields.
It was a beautiful day for our event and we were incredibly grateful to have not only Mrs. Marsha Barbour join us, but Governor Bryant as well. We also had Councilman At Large, Brenda Simkins and Mayor Blevins from the City of Pascagoula join us. Longtime partner Wells Fargo came and presented us with a $15,000 check as part of a grant with them. Each of our speakers had lovely things to say about the recovery and spirit of the Coast.
