Hang Out with Habitat 2018 Press Release

A REAL Reason to Rappel – Hang Out with Habitat 2018

 Gulfport, Miss. (July 16, 2018) –

Since January 2018, more than 70 families have inquired about Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s programs seeking a resource to help them repair their home, while living on a limited income. Many need roofing repairs, some need flooring, and others need help making their homes handicapped accessible. Habitat Mississippi Gulf Coast is now calling on you to help us help these families.

Habitat Mississippi Gulf Coast has a portfolio of affordable housing and financial education programs, which has allowed us to work with thousands of local families since 2007. Our home repair program alone has helped more than 700 families secure a safe place to live. We offer financial education and counseling to the public and to partner organizations, such as the Biloxi VA and Goodwill Industries. This calendar year alone, we have offered over 800 hours of financial education at no cost to the participants. We have been able to complete this work thanks to several generous funders. We are now asking the public to help us continue this work.

You can participate in this year’s Hang Out with Habitat and raise funds to support our programs. $1,000 gives “Edgers” the chance to rappel 300’ down the side of the IP CASINO RESORT & SPA on October 13, while supporting these initiatives. We encourage “chicken coop” fundraisers who can raise funds for the cause and watch the activity from down below. All participants will be encouraged to participate on a Habitat build site to gain a deeper understanding of Habitat MS Gulf Coast’s work. We welcome the public to come check it out this fall.

“Habitat is most well-known for its new home construction, but we are excited to share some of the other great programs we have to offer through this year’s Hang Out with Habitat,” says Director of Resource Development, Lindsay Avery.

“The opportunity to go ‘over the edge’ at the IP is an extraordinary way to recognize, celebrate and commemorate the organization’s progress while raising essential funds for its future,” said Duncan McKenzie, Vice President and General Manager of the IP CASINO RESORT & SPA.

Habitat works to provide strength, stability and self-reliance through opportunities and Hang Out with Habitat is one opportunity that will help provide many more to others. Our goal is to raise $100,000 and the IP Mississippi Charities, LLC has already committed $20,000 to the cause. Sponsorship opportunities are available for corporations looking to support these programs. Anyone interested in learning more is encouraged to visit www.hangoutwithhabitat.com, email overtheedge@hfhmgc.org or call 228-678-9100.

A professional rappelling company, “Over the Edge,” will oversee all safety and logistics for the event. More than 25,000 rappelers have safely participated in over 500 “Over The Edge” events since 2003. Habitat for Humanity of the MS Gulf Coast hosted the first “Over The Edge” event in Mississippi where Governor Phil Bryant was a VIP Edger along with Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes and various local media representatives.
