Habitat accepting applications for full-time service opportunities through AmeriCorps
Gulfport, Miss. (April 25, 2017) – Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been awarded AmeriCorps member positions and is looking for motivated and qualified candidates to serve locally during the 2017-18 service year in the Construction, Volunteer Services, and Development departments. The term will run from late August through mid-July. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 9, 2017.
AmeriCorps, often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps, is a network of National Service programs that engage more than 80,000 Americans each year in intensive service throughout the United States. National Service programs, such as AmeriCorps, are funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Throughout the year, AmeriCorps members serving with HFHMGC will support the mission, build capacity, and sustain efforts within the organization by:
• Building decent, affordable homes as well as weatherizing and rehabbing existing homes for the people residing in our service area
• Recruiting and managing volunteers in the building, rehabilitation, or repairing of homes
• Developing, documenting, and implementing a plan that will assist staff and Board of Directors members in building and enhancing relationships with donors in order to increase the overall donor experience and donor buy-in to Habitat’s mission
“It’s been my personal experience that AmeriCorps isn’t just a year of service to others but really an opportunity to grow personally and professionally,” said Chris Monforton, HFHMGC CEO. “My service term (’99) opened up a career path I otherwise would not have ventured down.”
Applicants who are accepted as AmeriCorps members and commit to serve for up to a year with HFHMGC will join more than 400 other Habitat AmeriCorps who will be placed in more than 110 communities nationwide. These members are anticipated to serve more than 2,200 families, provide more than 700,000 hours of service and engage more than 220,000 volunteers in local community building efforts.
Since Habitat partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service in 1994, more than 9,500 AmeriCorps members have served with Habitat for Humanity, helping Habitat to serve more than 26,000 U.S. families, contributing more than 16 million hours of service, raising tens of millions of dollars in resources and engaging nearly 3.5 million volunteers.
