What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that was created to kick off the holiday giving season. It began at the 92nd Street Y in NY in 2012 to lessen the guilt of overindulgence and holiday overspending. It has since grown and allowed nonprofits to leverage their collective power to promote year end giving. It is heavily marketed on social media as #GivingTuesday as a means to maximize the reach of all non-profits and bring attention to the giving season.
When is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which is Tuesday, November 29, 2016. The thought behind this is people start buying Christmas gifts on Black Friday, then look for online sales on Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday the following Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is positioned where it is because it is at the beginning of the holiday season and it plays on the idea that people have no problem overspending on Christmas gifts. Here is the opportunity for their money to go to good causes.
What is Habitat MS Gulf Coast doing this Giving Tuesday?
Habitat MS Gulf Coast intends to promote Giving Tuesday heavily through our social media channels and through our newsletter. We will be asking for monetary donations and promoting our holiday gift certificates, which allow people to “purchase” building materials.
